Although formula will be the primary source of nutrition for my twin boys (for health reasons, I couldn’t continue to breastfeed), until they’re a year old, I’ve started the boys on a few servings of homemade solid foods and they’re doing fabulously.
I feel so good about this addition of whole foods because I know that they’re getting a lot of nutrients with none of the dangerous, unnecessary stuff (i.e., additives, preservatives, etc.)
Also, the nutrients in these foods are still intact because I didn’t heat them to the high temperatures commercial food manufacturers are required to heat theirs to prior to their products hitting the stores.
It’s also more economical for us to prepare our own baby foods. Not to mention, more fun.
Avocado & Coconut Oil
- 6 (raw) avocados
- 2 tbs extra (unrefined) virgin coconut oil – Click for Nutrition/Health Benefits
- purified water (I vary the amount depending on the size of the avocados) – Click for Nutrition/Health Benefits
Preparation: Puree ingredients in blender or food processor (I use a Vita-Mix) & blend for about 15 seconds.
For the last three weeks, I have been giving both boys roughly two tablespoons of this mixture twice a day. They both take it readily–both VERY curious about this new stuff Mommy’s feeding them–and it makes me happy to see that they’re getting something so nourishing in their little bellies.
For efficiency sake, I make enough to fill two ice cube trays. Once frozen, I transfer the cubes to a plastic baggie labeled with the type of food and the date of packaging. It takes me about 10 minutes (from prep to cleanup) to make about 30 servings.
