Sprouts: 12 Reasons to Eat Sprouts

I try to add as many sprouts as possible to my family’s dishes. A cup here. A quarter of a cup there.

From salads and soups to sandwiches, bean dishes, smoothies & raw juices, they’re often present at our table.

Not only do they significantly increase the nutritional content of the dish, they add great color and extra texture.


 

In fact, there are many excellent reasons to regularly add sprouts to your family’s menu. Here are 12:

12 REASONS TO EAT SPROUTS

1. Eating sprouts is a great way to add more raw, living foods to anyone’s diet

2. The nutrition in sprouts are easily assimilated and digested

3. Sprouts provide the highest amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes of any food per unit of calorie

4. Sprouted seeds produce 6 to 15 times their weight in baby plants (aka sprouts), making them very economical

5. Sprouts contain concentrated amounts of phytochemicals (plant compounds) that protect us against many diseases

6. Sprouting significantly magnifies the nutritional value of the seed & these young plants provide much more nutrition than most older plants

7. Sprouted sunflower seeds are rich in vitamins B and D and all of the essential amino acids

8. Sprouted sesame seeds are a rich source of calcium, iron, phosphorous, niacin, and protein

9. Broccoli sprouts have exceptionally high amounts of a natural cancer-fighting compound sulforaphane

10. Alfalfa sprouts contain significant dietary sources of phytoestrogens

11. Green leafy sprouts contain high levels of antioxidants

12. Some sprouts contain “saponins” — organic compounds that lower bad LDL cholesterol and stimulate the immune system
